Against the Current: How Tougher Choices Lead to Achieving Your Goals

Goal and Potential Visualization

In life, we have two choices – we can go with the flow, giving in to easy decisions, or we can go against the current, choosing a harder path to achieve our goals.
Every decision has its consequences, but it’s the decisions against the current that lead us to real success.

In this article, I will show you how goal visualization can be the first step on this winding, yet rewarding path.

Imagine Your Dream

In the first article, we made the decision to change.
Now it’s time for something equally important – goal visualization, or imagining what you want to achieve.
Every great change starts with a dream, but for that dream to become reality, you need to see it in your mind.

Imagination is a Powerful Tool

It is through imagination that we can create images of things that don’t yet exist, but that we want to become part of our lives. As William Arthur Ward said:

If you can imagine it, you can achieve it. If you can dream it, you can become it.

Imagine what your life looks like once you’ve achieved your goal.
How do you feel?
How do you look?
What has changed around you?

This image in your mind is the first step towards making it a reality.

Goal Visualization: What, How, and Why?

Goal visualization is more than just imagining the final result.
It’s about creating a detailed image in your mind of the entire journey you need to take.
Think of it as if you’re writing a script for a movie where you are the main character.
What do you do every day to get closer to your goal?
What challenges do you face, and how do you overcome them?

„Ordinary people only believe in what is possible. Exceptional people imagine not only what is possible or probable, but also the impossible. And once they imagine the impossible, they begin to see it as achievable.”
– Dr Cherie Carter-Scott

Visualization is not just about imagining the final success. It’s also about seeing yourself daily overcoming obstacles by going against the current. What do you do every day to face challenges? Each difficulty is a step toward your success.

Everyone Has Their Struggles

I won’t lie to you – the road to your goal is full of challenges.
You might feel like Sisyphus*, rolling a stone uphill, only for it to roll back down again.
But remember, every obstacle is a lesson that strengthens you for the future.
Don’t fear difficulties, because they are what shape our strength and determination.

„Do not be afraid of going slowly, be afraid only of standing still.”
– Chinese proverb

The road against the current is not for everyone.
It’s a challenge that requires determination and courage, but the reward it brings is incomparable to the easy, thoughtless journey of going with the flow.

Imagine the satisfaction when you look back and see how much you’ve achieved, thanks to your perseverance.

Create an Action Plan

Goal visualization is not just about dreaming.
It’s also about creating a concrete action plan.
Think about the steps you need to take to achieve what you’ve imagined.
Break your goal down into small, achievable stages and set daily challenges for yourself.

Every small success is another step towards a big change.

*) Sisyphus was a figure from Greek mythology, the king of Corinth, known for his cunning and deceit. He was punished by the gods for tricking and betraying Zeus’ secrets. His punishment was to eternally roll a massive stone to the top of a hill, which, every time he was near the top, would roll back down. This futile, never-ending task symbolizes a fruitless, repetitive effort that brings no results.
